About the School
A legacy of faith, discipline and character.
Immaculate Conception Secondary School, Itak, was founded in 1967 by the Catholic Mission. Its origin lies in the Mission's decision to convert the Holy Child Modern School at Essene, in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, into a full-fledged secondary school. The proposed institution needed more land than the Essene community could provide, so the Mission looked elsewhere.
Nung Udoe Itak Community in Ikono Local Government Area, under the able leadership of the late Clan Head, Chief Anthony Enwenwen, readily donated a piece of land to the Mission for the project. Because funds were not yet available to develop the site, the school was started at the Convent so that there would be no delay, and the founders named it after its Pioneer Principal, Rev. Sr. Maria Immaculata Offiong.
Normal academic activities began in January 1967 with 57 students and 3 teachers. Barely seven months later the Nigerian Civil War broke out and the school closed until 1969, when it reopened for normal classes. Its facilities have since been expanded and standardised to meet growing demand, and the student population is now well over a thousand, with a remarkable academic staff. The school operates under the Catholic Education Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Uyo.
